A Bentley car is a masterpiece of comfort and design, admired the world over. But how could you begin to experience its luxurious interior, fine detail and impeccable finish within the walls of your own home?
A Bentley-style bespoke desk was the answer for one of our clients, who approached us to create this unique item for him.
British manufacturer Bentley Motors Limited produces cars that are steeped in heritage, showcasing magnificent interiors complete with walnut dashboards, sumptuous leathers and elegant surfaces that shine with a ‘liquid’ finish.
We knew and loved the look. All we needed to do was translate this vision into a beautiful, yet practical, piece of furniture.
Recreating the Bentley
We worked locally with Waterhall Joinery to look at the shape and forms of the Bentley, and how we could reproduce the quality and character of this historic car. Once we had decided on the design, structure and form of the desk, high-quality ‘instruments’ were sourced to complete the feel of sitting in the luxury of a Bentley.
To transport our client to the feel of the elegant control seat, we created a curved front to represent a dashboard, complete with a clock and glove compartment-style doors.
The contrast of Birdseye Maple and burr walnut imitated a cream leather interior against a walnut dashboard. For the desk’s exterior we continued the use of American black walnut and Birdseye Maple in an art deco style.
The corners and edges of the desk were curved, like the streamlined chassis of the original car. The handles, supplied by Joseph Giles, were cross hatched to match the Bentley’s gear stick design.
Marrying beauty with practicality, just as a Bentley does, we gave the perfect soft touch to the desktop with a red cow leather inlay. Sockets for lamps and laptops were hidden away within the glove compartment section, with ample space for wires.
This was a wonderful project, in which design know-how and first-class bespoke joinery came together to allow our client to truly put his creative vision in the driving seat.
